Libyan Women’s Union-Tripoli

The first women’s organization established in Libya was the) Women’s Renaissance Association( ,founded in 1954 in Benghazi under the leadership of Hamida Tarkhan. A branch was established in Tripoli in 1957 under the leadership of Saliha Dhafer. Associations concerned with women’s affairs were then formed under the umbrella of the Women’s Union in 1963. The official establishment of the Union dates back to 1963, when it was officially established under the name of the Libyan Women’s Union. Its activities focus on women and the family.

Its work strategy is to activate the role of women and their positive participation in key areas, including education, health, the economy, media,

social work, legislation, the environment, and politics. This strategy aims to remove obstacles and impediments that prevent women’s active participation in all these areas.

The Union consists of a Board of Directors, chaired by Ms. Magda Abdul Latif Al-Wefati, an Administrative Council, and several committees concerned with women’s affairs.
