National Union of Tunisian Women

The National Union of Tunisian Women, formerly the National Union of Tunisian Women, is the main women’s organization in Tunisia. It was founded in 1956 by a number of constitutional women activists, including the two sisters, Chadlia and Saida Bouzegrou, the nieces of the leader Habib Bourguiba,

Because of the progressive measures it took to benefit women, especially the issuance of the Personal Status Code on August 13, 1956, since

the first years the Union focused its activities on organizing national campaigns. Field awareness campaigns throughout the country to raise women’s awareness of their role in social and economic development. Since its inception, the Union has been responsible for raising women’s political awareness by urging them to fulfill their national duties and encouraging them to perform their electoral duty. This enabled them in 1959 to gain the right to vote and run for office.
